Creative Wishes for 2018!

On behalf of the visual arts students at South Kamloops Secondary School we thank you for taking the time to be inspired by the Kamloops paintings in the 2018 SKSS Art Calendar. In thinking ahead to the coming year we are reminded that we live in a community that supports youthful artists.  Thank you so much to the Kamloops community as we have had much support of our 2018 cards and calendar fundraiser. Stories that Live in the Present | Kamloops 2018

Stories that Live in the Present, Kamloops 2018 exhibition and fundraiser celebrates the 12th year of this unique opportunity for youth to represent our community through artistic vision.

Beginning with a field trip and tour by Keely Bland (Museum Educator) at the Kamloops Museum & Archives, South Kamloops Secondary art students consider the importance of local history.  Student artists engage in a personal artistic inquiry that identifies, reflects on, and captures the unique and richly diverse community voices of the region.  Our focus is to share visual narratives that reflect on how acknowledging and knowing the past is significant as Kamloops moves towards the future.

After this collection of acrylic paintings were completed, images for the printed calendar and cards were selected from a special community jury:  Keely Bland, Kamloops Museum & Archives; Christina Gauley, SD73 Arts Education Coordinator; Mr. Peter Persad, SKSS Vice Principal and Ms. Michelle Mattes, SKSS Vice Principal. 

In addition, 2018 calendars and cards will be available for sale as a fundraiser at the Kamloops Art Gallery Store, The Art We Are, Kamloops Museum & Archives and South Kamloops Secondary School Main office. Proceeds from the sales of the calendar and card fundraiser will support a donation to the BC Interior Community Foundation and future SKSS Visual Arts student initiatives.

On behalf of the Art Department at SKSS, please accept our gratitude and thanks for your generosity. Our program is enhanced in material, tangible ways by the generosity of the Kamloops Community.   It is always amazing to see how support from local media and organizations impacts art students.  In fact, I believe students begin to understand the true impact of visual arts through our exhibition and calendar publication.

By supporting the arts, students are given an opportunity to have a well-rounded education. It has been proven that art students succeed in school at a higher level and elsewhere in life. They learn patience, dedication, respect and that there are many different ways to see and interpret the world. Again, thank-you so much for supporting the South Kamloops Secondary Visual Arts program.

SKSS Kamloops Calendar Exhibition & Fundraiser 2017 

     Explore-Discover-Experience, Kamloops 2017 exhibition and fundraiser celebrates the 11th year of this unique opportunity for youth to represent our community through artistic vision.

     Beginning with a class presentation from Monica Dickinson and Ken Levin of Tourism Kamloops, South Kamloops Secondary art students consider the importance of promoting aspects of Kamloops by discussing attractions, activities and things to do in our City.  With this in mind, each student painted an individual interpretation of discovering, exploring, and experiencing tourism in Kamloops and surrounding area.  After the acrylic paintings were completed, images for the printed calendar and cards were selected from a special community jury:  Anyssa Gill, Kamloops Art Gallery, Art Instructor; Tara Look and Rachel Lewis, Tourism Kamloops; and Mr. Blake Buemann, SKSS Vice Principal. 

Over 40 student paintings are on view at the 

Sagebrush Lobby Gallery until December 16, 2016.

Celebrating First Nations Culture - Kamloops 2016

Celebrating First Nations Culture, Kamloops 2016 art exhibition celebrates the 10^th year South Kamloops Secondary students have conveyed aspects of our community through artistic vision. Created by senior art students, our paintings represent individual interpretations of a personally meaningful connection to First Nations. With this in mind, we acknowledge and give honour to the Secwepemc, the ancestral peoples who have lived on this territory for thousands of years, upon whose traditional land South Kamloops Secondary is located.

  

SKSS student work will be on exhibition in the Sagebrush Lobby Gallery through to  December 18, 2015. In addition, a selection of these artworks will be printed as a fundraiser in a full-colour 2016 calendar.  Calendars and cards can be purchased from the Kamloops Art Gallery, The Art We Are, and South Kamloops Secondary School.
